Planning your day around the prayers
When you are in Makkah or Madinah, the five daily prayers shape the rhythm of the day. The mosques fill up well before the adhan, and the roads around Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi become busy as people walk in. Knowing the prayer times helps you plan when to travel, when to leave the hotel and when to avoid the heaviest crowds.
Travelling between the cities
If you are taking a taxi between Makkah and Madinah, you can plan the journey so a prayer falls at a rest stop. Tell your driver which prayer you want to pray on the way, and he will plan a stop at a mosque. A private vehicle makes this simple, because you set the pace. See our Makkah to Madinah taxi for prices and travel times.
Tips for pilgrims
- Arrive at the mosque at least 30 minutes before the adhan on Fridays and in Ramadan.
- Leave extra time for the walk and for entering through the security gates.
- Check the timetable the day before an early airport transfer, since Fajr is early in summer.
Common questions
Which method is used to calculate prayer times?
The times use the Umm al-Qura method, which is the official calculation used in Saudi Arabia. They are worked out in your browser, so no personal data is sent anywhere.
Are these the same as the adhan at the Haram?
They are very close, but the call to prayer at the mosque can differ by a minute or two. Use the mosque announcements as the final guide.
What time zone are the times shown in?
All times are shown in Saudi Arabia time (UTC+3), wherever you are viewing the page from.
